1 | USE HASHTAGS WITH SMALLER TO LARGER NUMBERS
Okay, so apparently this actually does work. What is meant here is that, when you post a photo, lets say you eating your favourite pizza on a Friday night. Don’t post it under #PIZZA. As it stands it’s currently got 40.5 million post to it. YOUR post will get lost in all those photos, unless you’re already a famous arse kicking Instagramer, then it will be shown at the top or at least near it. Choose a less popular hashtag e.g. #PIZZAFIT 63.6 thousand post. Seems like a lot but still a hell of a lot less than 40.5 million. Give yourself a fighting chance people.
2 | PHOTOS SHOULD BE OF QUALITY NOT QUANTITY
Now this may sting a little but it’s the Gods honest truth. If you don’t want the truth then skip to the next tip! As JOSIE recently said in her post. If you post a blurry out of focus photo or you’re stood in front of some random background (an advert for Brexit or car insurance). Or even taking photos in poor lighting or weird angles of yourself. Or your Instagram grid is a mixed mash of quotes, random buildings, pictures of just other people. Your not likely going to grow a following. Taking the time to plan what you want your grid to look like mean everything, if you want to grow a following that is. I’m a lifestyle blogger, so I try to incorporate pictures to do with my lifestyle e.g. what I wear, places I go, what I eat etc. It’s not about posting a hundred photos in a week and hoping thousands will follow. Experiment and chuck in a few videos eh?
3 | POST PHOTOS WITH OR WITHOUT CAPTIONS
For me this one is a little bit of a pain in the arse. Do you or don’t you write a long or short caption. Do you or don’t you write a meaningful, intellectual caption. That will leave your followers and potential ones crying or belly aching laughing. You know what? write what you damn well please. Long, short, clever, witty, inspirational or not. The people will chose to read it if they please. I’ve seen top Instagramers use one liners and they are doing exceptionally well, so I think it depends on the person really.
4 | HOW MANY HASHTAGS?
Cor blimey, we could go on about this all bleeding night (i’d rather not). The old time question. Should I use one hashtag, two, three or maybe until it says I should stop or ban me altogether. I’ve heard on the Instagram grape vine 3 to 5 is good. But guess what Instagram allows you up to 30 damn hashtags, so why not use them all! as long as you use the first tip out of my 6.
5 | WHAT DOES YOUR INSTAGRAM GRID SAY ABOUT YOU?
Well hopefully my says a bit about my lifestyle. If you scroll all the way down to this time last year, you will see I clearly love taking selfies with a cow. The year before that a horse. Most recent me chowing down on a massive plate of vegetable noodles. And yes it was good! Hopefully you will see I quite fancy myself as an amateur model. So if you are looking to grow a following make sure your Instagram grid makes sense e.g. lifestyle, beauty, DIY, fashion. Okay nearly there…
6 | USE ALL THE DAMN FEATURES
Apparently the Instagram Algorithm gets a real thrill out of its users using all of its features. Obvious posting pictures. Posting videos whether it be boomerang, a short video or an Instagram TV one, Stories and everything related to it music, filters, swipe up actions, polls, emojis and so forth.
To be honest you could be and may already being doing all these crazy arse modern day things and more. And still not seeing much result, quite like myself. The truth is. Instagram isn’t what it use to be. There are so, so, so many people using the app now. Instagram WILL push your post to be seen to so many when you pay to promote your post. There ARE a lot of outside companies preying on the Instagram venerable and charging you to grow your following. There are still a lot of people doing the whole follow to unfollow BS, which is damaging to your profile, believe it or not. And ruins it for everyone else. It’s not easy to tell the good from the, lets just say not so good.
Just remember why you started in the first place. For fun, to share with friends, family. Now it’s all about the Brands if your a blogger. Brands will generally reach out to you, if they love the quality of your work. Remember don’t just accept any old brand work opportunity. If you believe your work is worth it then so will they.
