Once upon a time, literally two weekends ago before the world went to pot. A visit to the Hotel Cafe Royal was where I treated my very, very, very long term Boyfriend Jason to a very special Afternoon Tea for his 40th Birthday. And what an afternoon it was
Hotel Cafe Royal Is Where It Is At
Situated on busy Regent Street in Mayfair near Soho London, we walked towards the Hotel Cafe Royal and was greeted by a friendly door man. Into the 1920’s style revolving glass doors we went and into the full cream marble lounge area, where we were greeted by the Host of the Cafe.
We offered up our coats and in we went, straight into the most elegant exquisite room we’ve probably ever been in. The room known as “Oscar Wilde Lounge”, was the lounge to be at the Hotel Cafe Royal. In this room Oscar Wilde fell in love with Lord Alfred Douglas and David Bowie retired his band Ziggy Stardust. Mick Jagger, The Beatles and Elizabeth Taylor also had be know to danced the night away here too.
Kindly escorted to our very low but plush comfy seats we couldn’t wait to see what was on the special afternoon tea menu. Feeling very special at the Hotel Cafe Royal quite like Royalty, I opened the menu which was sealed with a wax stamp just like the period days or a bit like Harry Potter for a modern day reference. The menu was again kindly repeated by our waiter, whom was very caring and attentive throughout our dining. The menu did not do justice for what was beautifully presented. We were in for a real treat!
Let The Feasting Begin
Our first afternoon tea tier at Hotel Cafe Royal was presented with a very stylish tea pot (I do love a good tea pot!) If you want to feel British mate, as well as saying mate, get yourself a tea pot. Before our first tier was sent out we were instructed to choose from at least 25 different types of teas to compliment the first tier. As you guys know, I do eat mainly a Vegan/ Plant based diet but on this occasion (as it was a very special one) and Vegan options were not on the menu. I did indulge in cream cheese, clotted cream, chocolate and the most refreshing jelly cocktail to cleanse the pallet for the second tier.
As the chilled French Champagne N.V Veuve Clicquot Brut bubbled in our champagne flutes. Under the dimmed romantic lighting we listened to the resident pianist whom played very beautifully and added the the already elegant extravagant room and wonderful ambience. Upon the arrival of the second tier.I’m not going to lie but we were both well and truly stuffed by this point and everything food related seemed funny from this point on, who can eat what and how much of.
On the tiers there were two of everything but more sandwiches were offered, and we gladly accepted. I can safely say the second tier of sweet treats were literally the icing on top of our appetites. Not to mention unlimited tea of our choosing.
Some of what was on menu – Cheshire cheese and asparagus tart, cucumber and rose pepper cream cheese, Traditional raisin and plain scones clotted cream, strawberry jam, chocolate choux bun, salted caramel cream, Raspberry Victoria sponge and Rose, raspberry and lychee tart, my oh my.
In hindsight, if I had known we were going to be in lock down two weeks after this event due to a pandemic crisis, I would have stayed even longer.
The restroom area within the Hotel Cafe Royal had a wall covered with so many famous faces that have stayed and dined there before. The likes of Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Hall and many more. It felt great to know I have just dined in the same room as so many famous faces.
I would definitely recommend Hotel Cafe Royal to anyone who loves afternoon tea and fine dining, it was a definitely 5/5 for us.
